Slow Your Roll

If you're on the road this weekend, which 99% of us will be, be on the look out.

al.com reports
MONTGOMERY, Alabama -- Alabama State Troopers today will kick off their own holiday tradition: increased patrols on the state's roadways to help prevent crashes, injuries and fatalities.
The annual traffic blitz will begin at 6 p.m. and run through midnight Sunday. The 102-hour initiative will put added troopers on patrol and ready to help motorists.
Travel forecasts call for more people on the roadways this Thanksgiving holiday -- as much as a 4 percent increase.

"We expect traffic to be heavier than usual during this year's extended holiday period, and we will aggressively enforce traffic laws," said Col. Hugh B. McCall, director of Public Safety, in a news release.
Troopers will target such dangerous behavior as driving under the influence, speeding, distracted driving and following too closely.
"Not only can these driving behaviors cause crashes, but they can contribute to more severe crashes," McCall said.
Over last year's long Thanksgiving weekend, troopers investigated 412 crashes that left six dead and 185 injured.
Another six people died across the state during the same period last year in crashes that were not handled by troopers, for a total of 12. Of those, alcohol was a factor in seven of the deaths, and 10 of the 12 fatalities were not wearing seatbelts.
"Our goal is to make a positive difference on our state's highways," McCall said. "It's about saving lives and preventing crashes."

You think this one is nice check out JJ's albums
From Damncoolpictures

A seemingly ordinary snapshot broke the record for world’s most expensive photograph, at a Christie’s auction Tuesday night. Andreas Gursky “Rhein II” fetched $4.3 million, smashing the previous record set by Cindy Sherman's "Untitled #96" which brought in $3.89 million last May.

Birmingham Irresponsible with Money for the Classic, Classic

Who saw this coming??? Birmingham being not keeping track of funds, never.
--Birmingham Business Journal
Date: Friday, November 11, 2011, 7:05am CST
Several Birmingham officials are upset after learning how much public money was used for the Magic City Classic this year.
According to the Birmingham News, the city spent a total of $604,703 to produce the annual matchup between Alabama A&M and Alabama State universities, which pumps millions of dollars into the city's economy each year.
But some City Council members say tens of thousands of dollars of those purchases were never approved, and they question the legality of some of the spending.--

Crime at the Crimson Lakeside Diner

Carol Robinson Reports from the Birmingham News -

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- A 19-year-old female University of Alabama student was stabbed overnight at a campus dining hall during an altercation with another female student.
The incident happened about midnight at the Lakeside Diner on McCorvey Drive.

The victim was stabbed multiple times and taken by ambulance to DCH Regional Medical Center. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, said Lloyd Baker, commander of the Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide Unit.

The suspect, an 18-year-old female, also a student, was taken to DCH with injuries to her head.

Authorities have not released the names of either student.

Baker said the suspect told authorities that the victim and her friends have been after her for the past several weeks and that she didn't feel safe. She said she went to the bathroom and noticed the victim and her friends followed her.

The suspect told police the victim started the fight, and she used a knife to get her off of her.

"Due to the self-defense issue, this case will need further investigation to determine if charges will be brought," Baker said. "No arrest have been made at this time."
Anyone see this? I guess this goes to show you shouldn't cut in line, or you'll get cut.

Wilson Ramos Kidnapped

Source: CNN
The catcher for the Washington Nationals, a Venezuela citizen was kidnapped yesterday from his home in Venezuela. This is darn scary especially since this poor kid is not a US citizen. This means that he and his family have to rely solely on the fine work of Venezuelan Federal Authorities, not the FBI/US authorities. I know if I were ever kidnapped/arrested in ANY country, I'd like my chances of a good outcome better with the help of the US rather than a government run by Hugo Chavez.

Famous Alabama Athletes

Hank Aaron - is widely considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time. His most notable achievement was breaking the career home run record set by Babe Ruth. During his professional career, Aaron performed at a consistently high level for an extended period of time. He hit 24 or more home runs every year from 1955 through 1973, and is the only player to hit 30 or more home runs in a season at least fifteen times. Aaron made the All-Star team every year from 1955 until 1975. Aaron holds the MLB records for the most career runs batted in (2,297) and the most career extra base hits (1,477). Hank Aaron is also in the top five for career hits with 3,771 (third) and runs with 2,174, which is tied for fourth with Babe Ruth. He is one of only four players to have at least seventeen seasons with 150 or more hits. He also is in second place in home runs (755) and at-bats (12,364), and in third place in games played (3,298). He was born in Mobile, AL in 1934.

Potty Time, Woohoo!!!

Let me start by saying that the bathrooms at the law school stay pretty darn clean, thanks to the great staff we have here. But this is in no part thanks to the effort of the students. I'm just going to reflect on a few things I've observed in my one and a half years here.
