I don't quite get the 'Occupy Wall Street' movement and no one can really explain it to me. I've tried reading some articles about it and clearly the 99% are upset, but what exactly are they upset about or what are they trying to accomplish?
"They are mainly protesting, social and, corporate greed, and the power and influence of corporations, particularly from the financial service sector, and of lobbyists, over government." (source
Wikipedia) I personally agree there are fundamental changes that need to take place in our nation, however, I don't understand why this movement is happening now and not 3 years ago (or for that matter before then), and why they are externalizing their disdain rather than focusing their energy on more productive activies.
I get the feeling the protesters are upset because of either their lack of employment or the instability of their employment. As my state, Alabama, and others like Arizona are scaring illegal immigrants out of the States at break-neck speed, there will soon be jobs available. Are these protesters willing to pick veggies, clean dishes, or clean offices at night?

The goal of capitalism is to create profit for a company's shareholders, not to create jobs for people. Jobs creation is a secondary goal for companies, but for politicians it has become their primary focus. Wealth is certainly created through the successful company for prudent shareholders/investors, the top managers and officers of the company, and other businesses that deal with each other. In my opinion, social responsibility to the nation's needy or less fortunate falls not on the businesses but on the wealthy that have profited from the businesses. This moral duty for the fortunate should be the focus of politicians and those wanting change. Somehow we should incentivize the wealthy individuals to give back to the nation.
The current economic situation that the 99%ers find themselves in is not entirely a new one. There has always been a great gulf between the haves and the have-nots. I think that the 99%ers have an opportunity to overcome their current plight by becoming entrepreneurs. The mentality they seem to have is one of wanting to change the world, and what better way than creating new innovative companies and products. They should find a niche and create their own business, and perhaps create the change they want to see happen in the world. Despite what many are saying, there is
money being lent out.
I considered ranting about generational issues between the babyboomers and whatever gen I fall into (X or most likely Y), but the post is already to long. Basically Gen Xs and Ys need to be patient, spend frugally, and do without ridiculous stuff that we all want but don't need (aka $7.99/month for hulu+ instead of $30/month for basic cable).
This is just my opinion and I'd be glad to hear what you think...
